Museum of Art

Post by Azjah von Drachen Walde »

The Museum of Art: The fourth set of doors leads to the Museum of Art. The collection housed here is woefully lacking due to a huge heist successfully completed about one hundred years ago. The collection was robbed of several Van Gough’s, a Monet, four Cezanne’s, six Renoir’s, and three Seurat’s, among other lesser known artists. The curator for this wing has sought in vain for the return of these stolen prizes.

The museum has begun to collect the works of some of RhyDin’s contemporary artists.

Pierre August Renoir

Post by Azjah von Drachen Walde »

The first exhibit is dedicated to Pierre August Renior. Impressionist painter.

Title: By the Water
Technique: Oil paint on canvas
Dimensions: 46.2 x 55.4 centimeters
Year: Circa 1880

Artist: Pierre-August Renoir

Renoir's paintings are notable for their vibrant light and saturated color, most often focusing on people in intimate and candid compositions. The female nude was one of his primary subjects. In characteristic Impressionist style, Renoir suggested the details of a scene through freely brushed touches of color, so that his figures softly fuse with one another and their surroundings.

Post by Azjah von Drachen Walde »

George-Pierre Seurat

Born December 2, 1859 to a well off family in Paris. He died March 29, 1891. The cause of his death is uncertain. He was the founder of Neo-impressionism.

He attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1879 and 1879. He shared his ideas about pointillism with Signac. His best known work, Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte took him two years to complete.

Frederick Remington

Post by Azjah von Drachen Walde »

Remington was born in Canton, New York in 1861. He was the only child of the marriage, and received constant attention and approval. He was an active child, large and strong for his age, who loved to hunt, swim, ride, and go camping. He was a poor student, though, particularly in math, which did not bode well for his father’s ambitions for his son to attend West Point. He began to make drawings and sketches of soldiers and cowboys at an early age.

he attended Vermont Episcopal Institute, a church-run military school, where his father hoped discipline would rein in his son’s lack of focus, and perhaps lead to a military career. Remington took his first drawing lessons at the Institute. He then transferred to another military school where his classmates found the young Remington to be a pleasant fellow, a bit careless and lazy, good-humored, and generous of spirit, but definitely not soldier material. He enjoyed making caricatures and silhouettes of his classmates. At sixteen, he wrote to his uncle of his modest ambitions, “I never intend to do any great amount of labor. I have but one short life and do not aspire to wealth or fame in a degree which could only be obtained by an extraordinary effort on my part”. He imagined a career for himself as a journalist, with art as a sideline.

Remington attended the art school at Yale University, the only male in the freshman year. However, he found that football and boxing were more interesting than the formal art training, particularly drawing from casts and still life objects. He preferred action drawing and his first published illustration was a cartoon of a “bandaged football player” for the student newspaper Yale Courant.

Ivan Aivazovsky, 1817–1900, Russian artist. Born in Theodosia on July 29, 1817, he was taught by M. Vorobievin Petersburg Academy of Arts. He has travelled extensively until 1845, when he setteled down in his native town in Crimea. Influenced by classic French sea paintings, he managed to avoid the excessive contrasts of classical composition. His uniqueness is in showing the living, breathing, ever-moving sea. As a painter under the Navy General Headquarters (since 1844) he has taken part in several campaigns (including Crimean War of 1853–1856) creating a series of battle paintings ("Battle for Chesmen", 1848). In Aivazovsky's paintings the sea usually appears as the universal basis of nature (as well as history).

Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov, 1848–1926
Russian painter, one of the founders of Russian modernism in its national romanticist variant.
Son of a rural clergyman from Lopial village, he studied in Vyatka Seminary in 1862–1867, and later - was taught by I. Kramskoy in painting school under Petersburg Society of Encouraging Arts.
Vasnetsov was the founder of so-called Russian style in European symbolism and modern. He has transformed Russian historical genre, combining the medieval motives with poetic atmosphere of Russian fairy-tale and folk epics. This "Russian style" has found further development in his design and architectural projects, like the Church of Savior in Abramcevo.
Like many others truly loving Russian culture, Vasnetsov did not accept the changes coming with October Revolution of 1917
