Dresses And Dinner

The Loft was cold when s'jira woke. In the half-light of early morning, she turned over within the bed and pulled the covers and furs up over her small form. Comfortably, a knee pulled up and inwards in a slight, fetal position. Eyes were still trying to adjust when she caught sight of the small hearth and that the fire had died down to the dying glow of orange-black embers.

She pulled self up to sit on the side of the bed, pausing a moment's time to get her bearings. Sleep hung heavily about her, making her sluggish. The last couple of days, she had been crawling into bed just a little later than normal and waking far later than she was accustomed to.

Normally, 'jira woke just before or at the time the sun was coming up. But that had been months ago. Heart had mourned the absence of Panther so much that without thinking on it, even her sleeping habits had altered in the wake of it. A body simply felt too tired to just jump out of bed. Her hair was in a wild mess about her face. She absently shook disheveled locks out of the way, but at this stage of the morning and without a brush to it, hair simply just fell back into messy placement.

But this morning, she found that she was softly muttering a chiding at self and throwing back the covers. She should have been up, hours ago. This was not day for helping at the docks, but the lady Lola's dress was to be worked on and there was shopping to be done for the meal that very night.

Half draped in one of the blankets pulled from the bed, she knelt before the near-dormant hearth. Touch held that blanket in near and her other hand cleaned at the hearth and put more wood to it. With only one failed attempt, she soon had the fire off to a limping start.

Though she was full of energy that morning, Thoughts had been tumultuous with thinking on the Ranger lately. Heart was torn between mourning the very long absence of Panther, and enjoying Hawk's company. She lowered the hearth shovel and short-broom even as she thought on him again.

They had left the noise of the inn again the night before, to spend hours in the tea shoppe. There had been much talk of past and present purpose and she felt a tug at her soul to remember the scars she had seen?ones that he carried to ever-remind him of these things.

She settled down on the flagstones and dared to let her feet leave the warmth of the blanket to heat them with the nearby fire. As she shivered, she remembered how he had offered to her his own cloak the night before. To self, she smiled without reservation. The kindness had not gone unnoticed. And that he remembered in a way they had met nearly two years' time or more ago, on the steps warmed her within. By his words, he had tried to help her to the common room where others were and not to be so removed from the goings-on.

A strong shiver struck her then and a minor sound eeped forth. S'jira let the fire grow within the hearth while she hurried with dressing. The winter had been very cold so far and it was just at its beginning. More wood would be needed. And there would be food needed from the markets that day to cook for the dinner they were to have that night. She paused mid-room, as she was fastening the ties at the stomach of her dress.

The pang of wondering and guilt if this was a good thing touched her again. But she smiled. Despite her missing Panther, she was looking forward to Hawk more of his company. Bittersweet it was to know that change was all about her. She was a creature of habit, even if that deeply-cut rut was something unliked.

Her head dipped until her chin was against the pendants she wore, still with that small smile upon her lips. Not yet had he frightened her. Not at all like Karras or Lord Travanix, or many others. She then padded across the room to pull a brush through her hair until it was better than it had been moments before and far less unkempt.

Boots were pulled on and her dress layers were belted about the middle. Handing from the belt were a few pouches with one of them being her small, soft-leather coin purse. Into one of the other pouches, she took more needles and thread from the carved box that sat on the table. They would be needed for Lola?s dress later in the day, after the shopping for the foods and drink were done.

With a soft excitement that brought another pang of guilt, she grabbed her old, brown cloak and a soft sack for carrying the foodstuffs before she climbed down the ladder from the Loft to the livery below. When she was atop Trygg, she offered to the liveryman and his son a gentled nod of head and started off in the direction of the markets.
