Koinobori-matsuri in Kabuki Street May 6

Post by Izumi Takamine »

All weekend many businesses in Kabuki Street have been closed, as the locals enjoy the Beltane festivities coinciding with the yearly Golden Week. Golden Week finishes on Wednesday the 6th of May with the grand finale of the Koinobori, or carp banner festival. These colorful banners are a spring tradition, where the seasonal winds cause them to stream beautifully over the canals surrounding the Dockside neighborhood.

The festival is to begin in the afternoon with a parade starting at the gate of Zama Shrine. The route of the parade concludes at the northern 1-chome bridge at the canal marking the boundary of Kabuki Street and the riverfront zone. There lines have been rigged from either side of the canal's concrete flood plain to hang multitudes of the cheerful koinobori. The banners will enjoy a backdrop of Kabuki Streets numerous paulownia trees, which are presently in full bloom.

Visitors are welcome to join the parade, and street stalls will be open around the outer wall of Zama shrine selling already fabricated banners in all variety of patterns and colors as well as materials for guests that wish to craft their own personal design. Enterprising merchants will also undoubtedly set up stalls for refreshments and to sell cotton yukata in spring colors, perfect for enjoying the breezy weather. Visitors can look forward to hanging their own banner at the conclusion of the parade, and a festival to follow in the evening hours back at the shrine's inner courtyard.

To celebrate the Paulownia trees from which her forge takes its name, Izumi Takamine has crafted a number nearly identical daisho in honor of the anticipated festival. These sets of paired swords all have carvings on their tsuba and kashira themed around the distinctive purple paulownia flowers and the carp banners in flight as well as being fitted with ornamental menuki styled after Zama Shrine's rabbit residents, Shi-chan and Ma-chan. Though these weapons are elaborately decorated, Izumi issues her usual guarantee with them to any buyer and any funds raised from their sale will be donated to the shrine.

The Takamine Family Emblem flew high upon one of those koinobori. It matches well with the very same emblem sewn into a pattern on Na-rae's skirt. The Takamine clan (No relation to the other Takamine) traversed the festivities, with Na-rae leading their daughter by hand. She'd be sure to pick up yet another kitsune mask for the girl to add to her growing collection from other festivals.

Izumi spent some of the early part of the parade and festival helping Nako set up the booth where the swords would be displayed and making sure the assistant knew the prices to negotiate. After that was set, she joined Na-rae and Lisa and picked her daughter up so she could get a better view of their carefully prepared Takamine Family banner flying high. Upon arriving back at the shrine, she treated Na-rae and Lisa to pork dumplings from one of the food stalls.

Mallory attended the festival with horns polished but unadorned, wearing a coral pink and navy blue yukata that made not nearly as bold a statement as her brass-painted horns and fiery dress from Saturday night. She spent her time admiring the banners and gossiping with her neighbors in the district, and took time to buy a matched pair of Takamine blades in addition to a bokken.

At the end of the parade, she made sure to hang a Maeda family banner with Eri!

"Go outside and get us more customers."

The slamming of a drum could be heard from outside of Tacos Tacos. The fashion of yukata and alike flourished in Kabuki while the bus boy himself stood there shirtless with drum in hand.

Bang, bang, bang

"Paulownia Pink Margarita! Fajita Fiesta! Queso to die for and endless tortilla chips!" he exclaimed after a brief look to the piece of notebook paper he had been sent out with. "Wearing yukata? Get a free appetizer with your entree!"

The banging continued for a few moments then came another yell. "Late-Night Special after Nine! All you can drink margaritas!"

The pre-lunch yukata shopping with Nako bore fruit as Royal was able to sport some fitting attire for the festival.

Maggie had gone to the Koinobori with the intention of viewing the weapons for sale and purchasing a few. One of the vendors helped her choose an appropriate garment to make another visit to the Zama Shrine and see the rabbits. She enjoyed learning about the many cultures in Rhydin's melting pot of people.

Eden was excited to attend the Koinobori-matsuri! It was such a lively, colorful event. She brought her new wyrm with her, her tiny new friend spending most of the time swirling around her fingers and wrist. She did some shopping at the fair, browsing all the beautiful, brightly colored fabrics with the hope of buying a bolt or two to sew her own sun dresses.

But she got really excited when she saw some of the banners! Instead of ending up with a bolt of fabric, she saw something else she fell in love with!

It wasn't a traditional koinobori, but she loved it!
