Elements Askew - OOC Overview

Post by Goldglo »

Not much has been done with SunCatcher, (aka “the white opal”) since it was first introduced by Tareth Thorn almost 13 years ago, in January 2000. Many of you may not even be aware of SunCatcher’s existence. Over the years, there’s been debate about making SunCatcher a winnable rank like the other Opals and much talk about what to do with it other than simply have it remain tied to the apex of the Outback’s dome. When writing the Spiraling storyline, I wanted to make SunCatcher an instrumental part of what took place during the story’s climax and ending. Unfortunately, I never was able to write that ending so the involvement of SunCatcher within Spiraling has pretty much been an unknown to most players (and, obviously, characters).

As many of you know, Jake Thrash’s player was instrumental in crafting the ideas for and implementing the 5 Opals way back in 1997. I have had, over the last 18 months, many lengthy discussions with him about the Opals and how SunCatcher may or may not tie in to their story – remember, when the Opals were first conceived and implemented, SunCatcher didn’t exist.

Part of the reason for this storyline is to clarify more about SunCatcher, to finally after all these years provide an explanation as to how and why it ties in with the original 5 Opals (FireStar, IceDancer, MoonBeryl, PathFinder and ShadoWeaver).

In the familiar history of Rhydin and what was intended to be explained in the storyline Spiraling, on the night ShadoWeaver and MoonBeryl delved into the mind of Thia Amariel Simon and accidentally triggered the Sanyumato tempest, SunCatcher reacted for only the second time in its existence. It absorbed the bulk of Sanyumato's power – the power ShadoWeaver and MoonBeryl could not control – and smote it with Void. Though Sanyumato damaged Rhydin and forever changed the lives of some, the full wrath of the storm was never realized. SunCatcher sensed what was taking place and acted accordingly. It could do nothing else.

The In-Character history (i.e. the information our characters would have, could find, or might retain) of SunCatcher is sparse - nearly nonexistent. By its very nature, SunCatcher's tie with Void has overwritten its oral and written history innumerable times. A reality where Tareth Thorn never found SunCatcher nor brought it to Rhydin is a reality where Sanyumato had no barrier. In that reality, ShadoWeaver's and MoonBeryl's arrogance and blunder came down upon Rhydin with potency and fury the city had never known and for which it could never have prepared.

A Rhydin without SunCatcher is the reality in which the bulk of this story takes place.

Something important to keep in mind: This story-arc is an alternate reality of Rhydin; many things have changed, including the lives and personalities of many “familiar” characters. Therefore, many of those characters may say/act in a manner quite different than they would in “normal” Rhydin, the version in which we traditionally play and write.

References to/use of “familiar” characters are made with permission of the players of those characters. If a character of yours is referenced within this story arc and you wish their removal, please do not hesitate to contact us and we'll make the necessary edits. Similarly, if you think your character might have a place in this alternate reality, let us know and we’ll try to work something in.

For those of you asking ‘what the heck is Sanyumato?’ or for those who want to re-familiarize yourselves with some of the goings-ons in 2009 leading up to that event, the Spiraling storyline can be found here. If you prefer to read the story on the RDI boards, please click here.

Also, check out the Recommended Reading thread for other stories that not only relate to this tale, but are worth reading on their own merits.
