Burning Up

What do you tell a brawler with two black eyes? Nothing. Candy already told them twice.

Burning Up (1)

“It’s never going to heal if you keep tearing the stitches.” A pause, then he continued, “You shouldn’t have been fighting tonight.”

Doc removed the length of red-stained white bandages from Candy’s hand as he spoke. His attention moved an almost accusing gaze toward Tony’s door, but drew back to his patient when she spoke.

“Ton’s not the boss of me.”

The glare that came along with that statement expressed that no one was her boss in her opinion and the only reason she allowed Doc close was out of medical necessity. Candy’s reputation preceded her, Doc didn’t press that matter further. With the bandages removed, he held the back of her hand and inspected her palm. His lips creased in a frown.

His other hand came up, pressing the back to her forehead, as he asked, “Are you sick?”

Twitch. Candy instinctively smacked his hand away from her head.

“No.” Her response came flat and with another glare.

Surprised, Doc brought his hands away. “You’re burning up.”

“Can’t be helped,” Bringing her wounded hand back to his attention, “This, however, can.”

Her gaze read: Get to it.

Resigned, he returned to inspecting her hand. Long moments passed before he spoke again, “You should see a healer.” Catching the tensing of her jaw, he continued, “Or take a hiatus from fighting.” She continued to watch him darkly and he added, “Your choice. I’m not stitching you up again.”

“Fine.”

“Good.”

Looking genuinely pleased, he produced a card from his pocket with a business name and address.

“Addie does good work.” He didn’t go so far as to infer that Candy might like the woman.

She let him wrap her hand back up as she skeptically looked at the business card.

Burning Up (2)

“Candy…” The woman rolled the name off her tongue like a question, some inner working of her thoughts seeming to try to connect the name with the client it belonged to. “Interesting.”

“Can you help me or not?” Candy stood, guarded, taking in the surroundings of the healer’s small shop and the woman moving around trailing curling fingers of incense behind her.

“Can. Candy.” Head turning as she spoke over her shoulder, Addie pointed with the stick of incense to a grass-green been bag chair. “Sit.”

The dulcet tones, the way she spoke her name, rankled Candy in some way she couldn’t put her finger on. Maybe it was that calm, knowing smile the woman watched her with. Healers, they were worse than the wards. At least the wards were faceless and silent… far as she knew. Candy considered the door and another stitch job. A look to her palm and then she moved to the beanbag chair, instead.

“Now what?” Speaking in the sullen tone of the teenager she’d suddenly become as she watched the wisp of the woman.

“Now, now.” The woman chided with a soft chuckle. “Restless spirit.”

The older woman’s hand came down, patting the choppy locks of Candy’s hair like a caring mother might. Much like with Doc, Candy’s hand came striking out to bat the hand away but the old woman proved to be surprisingly nimble. The petting hand capturing Candy’s wrist, looking amused before releasing her grip.

“Like a bull with everything red before it. Can, for the hand. Not, for the spirit.” Addie wore a look like it couldn’t be helped and smiled apologetically. “Other hand.”

Teeth grit, but the battle was out of her. Candy felt hot and the incense made her head feel lighter. Grunting a displeased exhale, she held out her palm to the healer.
