Gondar Division: Cletus Ganderfald vs. Elijah Basia Uhr

First Round: Simply put, there isn't a single second round matchup in this entire tournament which was arrived at by more radically different first round results. I won't lie...while I would not question Janella Vallonia an All-Time DoF tournament...Swords is another story. It appears that the voters may have agreed with me, as Cletus demolished her to the tune of 21 votes to one. This made Cletus the second top vote-getter of the entire tournament, only behind Dalamar Ar'Daumon. On the other hand, Janella can have this said about her: She was the only no. 16 seed in the first round to recieve a vote. The other three(Rabmallet, Sascha Sau Bau, Soerl Lute) were all completely shut down.

Very starkly contrasting this result was that of the neighboring first round duel, between Elijah Basia Uhr and Teagan Rielea. Elijah leapt out to a three-to-four vote early lead...honestly, this was a development that surprised me. After all, E hasn't been around for some time now, and Teagan has had a very successful 2009 in the rings. And she did catch up, first garnering a tie and then taking the lead...but she couldn't make it last. At the end of the voting period, Elijah and Teagan were tied at 8 votes apiece. Elijah advanced by virtue of being the higher seed in the matchup...given that this was a no. 8 vs. no. 9 matchup, that means that this was literally as close as any matchup can get in this thing without me having to find another tie-breaker due to tied ranks!

Past History: As might be expected between two politically involved veterans who openly sought titled ranks, Cletus and E knew each other quite well. In TDL's Season 518, Cletus defeated Elijah by a score of 5 to 3 in 10 rounds. However, in the spring of 2002, Cletus issued an unofficial challenge as Renegade Baron of the Ninth to all Barons who were Loyal under Overlord Dalamar Ar'Daumon. Cletus, who had just defeated Dalamar in a Baronial Intercession duel prior to winning the 9th Ring from Ministere Secondat, threatened to challenge Dalamar for the Overlordship, but invited any and all Loyal Barons to face him in an unofficial Baron vs. Baron challenge first, with the loser vacating their ring. No less than five Loyals answered, but there was only one unofficial duel...in the first duel of the challenge, Cletus was defeated by Loyal Baron of the 12th Elijah Basia Uhr, in a 19 round classic that has been tragically forgotten by a score of 11-9.5. However, while Cletus vacated the 9th Ring, the results were largely negated when Cletus re-won the ring in the Summer 2002 Warlord's Tournament not long afterwards...probably a key reason why it's been forgotten. Elijah also defeated Cletus in a long semi-final duel in the Fall 1999 WLT, where both Basia Uhr(2nd place) and Ganderfald(4th place) won two of the six prizes offered in that particular Warlord's Tournament. There have probably been several other encounters between these two.

"Common Links" in Challenge and Tournament Duels: Elijah defeated Karen Wilder in a 2-0 B03 to win the 12th Ring, while Ganderfald has faced Wilder no less than four times in the challenge ring, with an ultimate 1-3 record: While he defeated her to successfully defend the Overlordship in a 2-1 B03, he lost the mantle to her(his third reign, the successful defense was his first), lost to her in an unsuccessful challenge for the 4th Ring(2-0 B03), and lost to her in a Right of Challenge duel in a Baronial Intercession as the interceding Overlord. On the flip side of matters concerning their records against other top duelists, Ganderfald is 3-0 in the challenge ring against the legendary Dalamar Ar'Daumon, winning the mantle of Overlord from him and defeating him in two Intercession duels as the challenger--one being a shutout. By contrast, Elijah lost to Ar'Daumon in a shutout, in an unsuccessful challenge for the Overlordship(Dalamar's first defense). Elijah lost to Seamus MacDonnaugh in the Fall 1999 WLT finals, while Cletus lost the Overlordship to him a little over two years later in a 2-1 B03. Finally, Basia Uhr defeated Cassius Maximius in the one-loss bracket final of the aforementioned Warlord's Tournament; Ganderfald has defeated Maximius twice in the challenge ring; in a sucessful defense of the 2nd Ring, and in a Baronial Intercession duel as the interceding Overlord.
