State of the Site report!

Post by Eden Parker »

Hey everyone!

As part of my role as Treasurer, it’s my job to provide a biannual report to the Board regarding the financial health of our community. In furtherance of our commitment to always be transparent with our members, we thought this was a good opportunity to share that report with you and to assess how we’re doing. I am thus pleased to share our first biannual State of the Site!

Introduction

One of our central goals has always been to preserve this hobby we all enjoy by making our community sustainable. This involved some hard work on the technical front, some key creative improvements from our staff members, and a whole lot of patience and support from our community. We could not be more grateful.

By the Numbers

Since October 2018:

Over 300 new profiles registered
Over 300 new Discord members joined
Over 20 new or revived story folders
340% increase in DoS participation*
123% increase in DoM participation*
110% increase in DoF participation*

Improved Features
  • Icon request system restored
  • FAQs updated
  • Seven (7) new settings created
  • Introduction of seasonal settings
  • Addition of the Red Dragon Inn
  • Rules revamp in all three sports
  • Return and introduction of some of our favorite hosts and callers
  • Brand new special events
The Financials

Since the founding of the site, we have incurred no additional expenses. The total cost thus far has been limited to securing the server and registering the domains, approximately $225. The server is secure until October 2021.

In October 2019, before our next report, we will need to re-register the domains, the cost of which will be approximately $50.

We have received two (2) member donations since October 2018.

The community’s current PayPal account balance is $55.

What’s Next

On the technical side

We are currently working with our hosting company on a technical issue that is causing occasional slow-responses from our site. We are optimistic that we will be able to resolve it soon. On the off-chance that our hosting company is unable to fix the problem, we are researching alternative options. Migrating to a new host would require significant effort from our technical staff as well as additional financial investment. We’re hoping to avoid it. We will keep the community informed about developments regarding this issue.

Advertising

In the spring of this year, we took our first cautious steps into self-promotion by advertising on popular Facebook roleplay groups. The result was a mixed success, but it brought new interest and attention to our site and server, and it helped some old friends find us again.

In the next month or so, we will be continuing that cautious foray into self-promotion by adding our Discord server to an aggregator that provides a searchable list of public RP servers. Since we’re not sure what kind of impact this will have on our community, we intend to continue taking this slowly.

Upcoming Features

Our staff has some exciting new developments in store, including the return of a favorite seasonal setting and new dueling events and tournaments.

As always, if anyone is interested in joining our hosting or calling team, please contact Mallory Maeda’s player.

Additionally, if anyone is interested in reviving our community tumblr, @rhydincity, please contact the player of Eden Parker.

Finally, we’re hoping to revamp some of our site art over the next several months. If you see something you like, please feel free to reach out to Eden Parker.

Conclusion

If you have any suggestions, questions, or concerns, please feel free to send them our way, either by raising them directly with a staff member or posting in the Community Townhall.

Because this is our very first report, it is slightly more elaborate than future reports will be. But the goal will never change---to serve you the best we can. We look forward to a long future of having fun together!

*Numbers are approximate, arrived at by comparing the number of duels from January to June 2018 with the same period in 2019.
