If the voice is ripe with emotion as she sings, it's because of the fine patina of soot and sorrow scorched throughout her soul.
If she is cool and removed, it's because inside her heart is a hothouse flower; sticky, pink, hot, fevered, and too-delicate.
If she's whispering sweetly in your ear, it's because there's a pistol at your back, honey.

She used to have another name, before this one, and later down the line there will be another. She is not her own, she belongs to the songs, and, as witnessed only by sad motel blue walls written with the shadows of, the men who hold their mean casino hands, veiny and thick with gold rings, outstretched in a strangle over her. There are desolate smoky stages with red curtains and pale spotlight moons awaiting her entrance, forever. But time here hangs all crooked and bent out of shape. The rose petals were many but wilted at the corners.
