I never knew my mother.

I knew of her, certainly. She was...famous? I guess. But I think the term 'infamous' suits her better. She wasn't really a good woman, you see. Not, at least, until she found out she was pregnant, and then things must have changed, because after I was born and had grown a bit, people talked about her like she was some kind of saint. Like most saints, she had been very flawed, a sinner if there ever was one, but she still managed three miracles before she died.

She turned away from the darkness.

She gave birth to me.

And she broke free from my father.

Ah, my father...now there is another story. He never even knew I existed...at least, not until it was too late for him to do anything about it. As a matter of fact, he didn't know about me until the very last day of his life.

And then I killed him.

But before he met his end he took almost everything and everyone I had ever cared about from me.

But that was another world, another, darker place that bears only a superficial resemblance to where I am now.

Here, my mother and father are very much alive, and very different from the people that were the beginning of my existence.

They don't know the truth of it, of course.

How do you tell two people that the evil versions of themselves spawned the child that would be the death of them both?

Our destiny exercises its influence over us even when, as yet, we have not learned its nature: it is our future that lays down the law of our today.
